Adaptive Watersports
Welcome to the new home of the Wilmington Disabled Athletic Association's Adaptive Watersports Day! This year we have moved the event to The FISH Institute located in Crocker's Landing Marina, 1322 Airlie Rd. Wilmington, NC 28403.
About Adapted Water Sports
Phoenix Rehabilitation Associates, Inc. and the Wilmington Disabled Athletic Association have partnered to create the annual Adapted Water Sports Day. This event, which took place initially in 1997, gives persons with disabilities an opportunity to take part in water sports in a safe environment. Community sponsors fund the day, which allows participation to be free to these individuals.
The Main activity is Adapted water skiing. For this, we use a sit ski. The ski is attached to the pull boat via a ski rope. The ski rope is attached to the ski. The other end of the rope is attached to the pull boat using a quick release device. This device is manned at all times and allows rope to be released from the pull boat as soon as the skier enters the water. Accompanying the pull boat at all times are two chase boats, typically jet skis. The chase boats hold trained volunteers who enter the water as soon as a skier enters the water. These workers assist the skier in becoming upright and repositioning the ski. Other activities include boat rides, kayaking and jet ski rides. A safe and fun day for the participants and volunteers is the top priority. All volunteers are required to complete an educational class that covers watercraft and procedures used throughout the day. As an added safty measure, the United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxillary have provided support in the inter-coastal waterway to slow boat traffic and direct away from the ski area.
